Get ready for another exciting, world class race when the second Black Arrow Express 5150 Triathlon Subic Bay Philippines is held Sunday, October 27.
It will be a wide open race with the six professionals entered capable of winning it all.
Sam Betten, Mitch Robbins and Jakub Langhammer all have what it takes to win the men’s pro division. Dimity Lee Duke, Manami Iijima and Laura Wood are each equally capable of ruling their division.
The Aussie Betten has a winning track record in racing the Olympic distance 5150 race which he actually likes because of its unique demands.
“I really love racing over this distance. It is very different to a 70.3 or IRONMAN in the sense that in a 5150 you go as hard as you can for the entire race,” said Betten.
“I have been racing 5150 triathlons for about 15 years and because of this I am a lot more experienced over this race distance compared to 70.3 which I have only been racing for about six years. I really enjoy the faster pacing of the 5150 triathlon events.”
Fellow Aussie Robbins is the defending champion and is looking to repeat his victory over Betten himself. Robins leaned on a blazing run to beat Betten by one minute last year.
Defending champion Iijima of Guam built a comfortable lead in the swim that was enough cushion to survive the challenge of the strong finishing Duke to win last year.
But Duke can build on her victory last July in the first Penong’s 5150, which was turned to a duathlon, to regain the 5150 title she won in 2017.
Czech Langhammer, who shared top honors with Duke in Penong’s duathlon, and New Zealander Wood may be longshot bets to win but anything can happen especially in the tropical heat, an important consideration when racing in the Philippines.
All six are regular participants in Sunrise Events races and frequent visitors to the Philippines.
Betten for his part says he likes to compete in Sunrise Events races every chance he can get.
“I really love to race as many of the Sunrise Events as I can every year. The Sunrise team set such a high standard with the professionalism and overall event experience,” said Betten.
