Davao City welcomes the world as it hosts Alveo IRONMAN 70.3 Davao

Davao City rolled out the red carpet as it welcomed local and foreign guests and participants to the Alveo IRONMAN 70.3 Davao, the first world-class triathlon in Mindanao, to be held March 25, 2018 at Azuela Cove.

The city government highlights the diverse but rich culture of the 11 tribes in the city during the hosting of the event as the “Durian Capital of the Philippines” and home of the majestic Philippine Eagle hosts the biggest sports spectacle in Mindanao this year.

Participants will experience racing through Davao’s fusion of nature and urban infrastructure. The other neighboring cities and municipalities of Panabo City, Tagum City and Carmen will likewise be showcased.

The race starts with an open water swim at the Pakiputan Strait. Participants start with a 500-meter swim before turning right for another 50 meters. They then head south and swim 850 meters. Participants will then make a 25-meter right turn heading to the final 475 meters then exit in Azuela Cove for the first transition.

Safety and security of participants will be the prime concern as emergency teams of Philippine Coast Guard and Davao City’s Central 911 will be deployed in the swim stage to ensure that no untoward incidents occur.

Athletes atop their bikes will ride into the highway for the fast, single loop bike ride from Davao City through Panabo and Carmen all the way to the turnaround point at Tagum City. The race will traverse several cities on a straightforward course through wide and scenic roads.

Government officials have finalized road closure schedules especially along the main highway route from Tagum to Davao.

Davao City’s Central 911, Philippine National Police, Task Force Davao and Public Safety Command Center and the Philippine Air Force have coordinated to ensure the safety of participants.

The PAF committed to lend helicopters for quick transport of triathletes who will need major medical attention. Hospitals in Carmen, Panabo and Tagum City have also been alerted and are ready to address any emergency.

The participants will then head back to Azuela Cove for the second transition into the run part of the race. They will head out into J.P. Laurel Avenue for the concluding run which will be a two-loop counter clockwise, 10-kilometer run on a flat layout through Davao’s commercial district.

Security has also been tightened with Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Task Force Davao and other uniformed personnel in Davao del Norte helping the Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) put in place a comprehensive security plan to ensure the safety and security of the athletes and guests.

There are also the medical teams ready to give assistance during the event.

Close to 1,800 participants from 39 countries will participate in the inaugural Mindanao staging of the highly successful IRONMAN series organized by Sunrise Events, presented by Petron, Department of Tourism and Tourism Promotions Board and hosted by Davao and Azuela Cove.
